Electro Chemical Laboratory Services

Scope Of Services

For the past ten years, CMT has provided repair, calibration and certification of test, measurement and diagnostics equipment at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. As one of the county’s premier aerospace equipment focused labs, CMT’s Electro Chemical (EC) Laboratory operates under the Air Force 45th Space Wing to support government and commercial space flight operations. Our laboratory customers include space, military, defense and intelligence agencies including NASA, Air Force, Army, Military Sea Lift Command, Coast Guard, and the National Reconnaissance Organization.

The lab has an unparalleled record of performance in meeting our customer’s delivery schedules and requirements particularly where personnel protection equipment is utilized on dangerous high-stakes pre-launch operations. This includes extensive support to SpaceX ongoing cargo missions.

Calibration is the process of comparing and adjusting, if necessary, an item to the calibration standards used by the EC Lab. Equipment handled by the lab includes x-ray systems, oxygen analyzers, mass spectrophotometers, ultra violet analyzers, hydrogen detectors, multi gas detectors, gas chromatographs, inductively coupled plasma and fourier transform infrared systems. Aerosol and liquid particle counters which are used to protect payloads while they are being serviced at Cape Canaveral, the Kennedy Space Center and commercial clean rooms are also maintained here. Maintenance and calibration of most portable toxic vapor detectors is also performed at this site. In addition, calibration gas is generated in the lab, placed in sample containers, and taken to locations requiring on site calibration.

Below are a few of the services we provided:

    • Calibration
    • Repairs
    • Chemical Analysis
    • Installation
    • Laboratory Relocation
    • Maintenance

EC Lab maintenance responsibilities also include direct support of the Air Force Aerospace Fuels Laboratory. This laboratory is a complete service chemical laboratory providing quality assurance/quality control support to DOD, NASA, contractors, and all authorized range users.

CMT’s EC Lab also services equipment for the top aerospace commercial contractors including Lockheed (vapor detectors/particle counters), Boeing’s GPS facilities, and United Launch Alliance.

Achievements & Accolalades

Performed 5139 calibrations and repairs both in place and at the main laboratory on chemical analysis equipment used in the support of personnel and payload protections systems used throughout CCAFS, KSC, PAFB, Vandenberg AFB, and Titusville, Florida. In the last few years the laboratory has successfully absorbed a 28% increase in total units maintained. The Space X inventory has grown from 20 systems in 2012 to 181 systems today. An 800% increase.

So far this fiscal year to date we have spent 598 hours installing/repairing/calibrating our new Kin-Tek Gas Generators along with 421 hours of Special Projects, such as, moving the complete gas laboratory to allow for the installation of a new 20 ton air conditioner while at the same time delivering required services to our range users.

Every client levied launch cut-off date was met on or before deadline. Unscheduled calibration and maintenance services were provided with every objective accomplished. Implemented every contract requirement and conformed to our Statement of Work requirements with little or no external support.

The laboratory performed flawlessly during all assessments. Received “No Discrepancy Ratings” from both LOSC Safety and Quality for the period. There were no Reportable Accidents during this interval. In addition, R. Fafard, Environmental Scientist for VZ Technologies gave the laboratory 4 quarters of “No Findings” during her Quarterly Hazardous Materials Inspections. Booz Allen Hamilton delivered similar reports during their evaluations of our in house Gas Manifold System. The customer’s Property Inspections resulted in all Property Accounted For and a Records Completely Accurate result.

During this period the laboratory management has submitted many Cost Avoidance Solutions to LOSC/Government. Two of the recent submissions are the use of 308 ACF gas storage tanks to supply the laboratory with required gases giving the government an annual savings of $91,000.00(In progress). The second proposal was having the EC Lab perform gas generator calibrations versus sending the units to the vendor. This is now in practice resulting in a reduction of $11,410 from the yearly cost of running the lab.
